Do you use heirloom seeds/where do you source your seeds from?
We carefully retain seeds from previous crops to preserve the quality and purity of our heirloom vegetables. By selecting the healthiest, most vigorous plants for seed saving, we ensure that desirable traits (such as flavour, resilience, and productivity) are passed down each season. We store these seeds properly to maintain their viability and prevent cross-pollination that could alter their heirloom characteristics.
To complement our saved seeds, we also source from credible seed suppliers who specialize in non-GMO, heritage, and organic varieties. This helps us maintain genetic diversity while ensuring our crops remain true to their original form. By combining seed saving with trusted sourcing, we uphold the integrity of our heirloom vegetables for future generations.
We do not currently offer delivery - but we are working on it!
Where does the water come from that you use on your crops and how do you know the quality of your water?
The water used in our gardens comes from a natural spring well, providing a clean and sustainable source for irrigation. This spring-fed well ensures that our crops receive fresh, mineral-rich water, free from the chemicals often found in municipal sources.
To maintain high standards, we test our water monthly for quality and contamination. These regular tests check for bacteria, nitrates, and other potential contaminants, ensuring that our irrigation water remains safe for our plants and customers. By using natural spring water and closely monitoring its purity, we support healthy soil, thriving crops, and sustainable farming practices.
How do you control weeds, pests, and diseases?
Weeds:We use decomposable biofilm and hand hoeing as natural weed control methods to maintain healthy crops without relying on chemical herbicides.
Decomposable biofilm is a biodegradable mulch that we lay over the soil to suppress weed growth. It blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, preventing them from germinating while still allowing water and nutrients to penetrate the soil. Over time, the biofilm breaks down naturally, enriching the soil without leaving plastic waste.
Hand hoeing is a precise, labor-intensive method where we manually loosen the soil and cut weeds at the root. This helps control unwanted plants without disturbing the surrounding crops. By regularly hoeing, especially when weeds are small, we prevent them from competing for nutrients and moisture, keeping our fields productive and sustainable.
Pests:Bug netting and trap crops are effective, natural methods for pest control in gardens. Bug netting is a fine mesh covering placed over plants to create a physical barrier that prevents pests like cabbage moths, aphids, and beetles from reaching crops. It allows sunlight, air, and water to pass through while keeping insects out.
Trap crops are sacrificial plants grown near valuable crops to lure pests away. For example, nasturtiums attract aphids, while radishes can draw flea beetles away from leafy greens. Once pests gather on the trap crop, they can be manually removed to reduce their numbers. These methods eliminate our need for chemical pesticides while promoting a healthier garden ecosystem.
Diseases:We follow sound agricultural practices to minimize the risk of plant diseases in our gardens. This includes proper crop rotation, adequate spacing for airflow, and careful sanitation of tools and equipment to prevent the spread of pathogens. Healthy soil management, using compost and organic amendments, also strengthens plants’ natural defences against disease.
In the event of an outbreak, we take immediate action by identifying and removing affected plants. These plants are destroyed rather than composted to prevent the disease from spreading further. By maintaining high growing standards and responding quickly to any issues, we protect the overall health of our crops while reducing the need for chemical treatments.
Is your farm adjacent to conventional farms that may use sprays or cultivate GMO crops?
We protect our organic gardens from outside contamination by maintaining a regulated 55-foot buffer zone from non-organic farms. This buffer acts as a protective barrier, preventing unintended exposure to synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers that may drift from neighbouring properties.
By following this strict organic standard, we ensure that our crops remain free from chemical residues and maintain their organic integrity. This distance also helps preserve soil health and biodiversity, allowing us to grow produce that meets the highest environmental and food safety standards.
What is the average timeframe from when you harvest to reaching the shelf?
We harvest our crops daily at their peak to ensure the best flavour, texture, and nutritional value. By picking produce at just the right time (when it's perfectly ripe) we maximize its freshness and quality.
Because our farm is directly connected to our farm market, these freshly harvested crops are available for sale within minutes of being picked. This means our customers get the absolute freshest produce possible, without the delays of transportation or storage. By harvesting daily and selling immediately, we provide farm-to-table quality that you can truly taste.
